Cold vs. Flu Symptoms & Treatment

As the seasons change, that first sign of a tickle in your throat can leave you wondering: is it a common cold, or could it be the flu? Both are respiratory illnesses, but there are important differences - knowing the facts can help you determine the best course of action.

The Common Cold

A cold is a milder illness, and tends to come on gradually. The most common symptoms tend to be concentrated in the head and throat.

  • Symptoms: Runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, and a sore throat.
  • Fever & Body Aches: A fever is rare in adults. Body aches tend to be mild.
  • Duration: Symptoms usually last 7-10 days.

The Flu (Influenza)

The flu is more severe than a cold. It often strikes suddenly & intensely.

  • Symptoms: A high fever (over 100°F), severe body aches, a persistent cough, and headache.
  • Fatigue & Body Aches: Both are so severe, it can be difficult to get out of bed.
  • Duration: The symptoms are typically more intense and last 1-2 weeks, with fatigue lingering longer.

At-Home Treatment

For most people, both colds and the flu can be managed with at-home care.

  • Rest: Your body needs energy to fight off the virus. Stay home, and get plenty of sleep.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, clear broth, or herbal tea to thin mucus and prevent dehydration.
  • Over-The-Counter Medication: Things like acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil) can relieve fever and body aches. Decongestants can help with runny nose.
